A Piece of Being Whole

My friend Charlie, an extremely talented drummer and musician, finally explained to me what it is about addiction that makes it into an addiction. I could never understand why people get addicted to drugs.

He said it is when people feel like there is a piece of them missing and when it's added it makes them feel whole. Drugs is the shortest route to that.

But there are other means to find the missing piece. Some people find it through yoga, music, religion, church. Some fill it with food, shopping, stealing, gambling, sex, drugs or alcohol.

But in the end, all want to be whole.

I said I could never get addicted. I have this built-in mechanism that says “stop, it is enough”. “It is because you are whole,” replied Charlie, “you do not have the missing piece”…
